fashion

Sustainable fashion is based on 3 core concepts: environmental impact, social equity, & economic viability. A CLOTHING BRAND IS SUSTAINABLE At the intersection these core CONCEPTS.

An important lesson about sustainability is that you can’t consume your way to a more sustainable world. Knowledge is the exception to that statement, and understanding the life cycle of the things we consume is a great starting point for making more climate friendly lifestyle choices. To start, clothing is something we all consume, yet happens to be extremely destructive to our planet and exploitative to the people that produce it.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Ellen MacArthur Foundation published the statistics below, which provide insight about the harmful impacts of the fashion industry.

  • Every year the fashion industry uses 93 billion cubic meters of water, which is enough to meet the consumption needs of five million people.

  • Around 20 % of wastewater worldwide comes from fabric dyeing and treatment.

  • The fashion industry is responsible for 10 % of annual global carbon emissions, more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined.

  • Every year a half a million tons of plastic microfibers are dumped into the ocean, the equivalent of 50 billion plastic bottles. The danger? Microfibers cannot be extracted from the water and they can spread throughout the food chain.

  • Of the total fiber input used for clothing, 87 % is incinerated or disposed of in a landfill.
